Wen-Chih Liu Assistant Professor/ Attending Surgeon, Department of Orthopedics, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital

Wen-Chih Liu
Andy Liu is a certified orthopedic hand surgeon from Taiwan with expertise in value-based care in hand surgery. Previously, he served as faculty at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, focusing on areas like upper extremity trauma, peripheral nerve injuries, microsurgical reconstruction, and WALANT procedures. In 2022, driven by a passion for research and innovation, Dr. Liu moved to Boston to join multidisciplinary research teams at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research efforts include significant contributions to various cutting-edge projects: • Post-Amputation Chronic Pain Research: As part of a prestigious NIH U-19 initiative, Dr. Liu investigated chronic pain following amputation, focusing on surgically treated neuromas to enhance patient outcomes. • AI 3D Fracture Reconstruction: Collaborating with data scientists, he co-developed an AI solution that transforms X-ray images into detailed 3D radiographs, potentially revolutionizing fracture treatment workflow. • Pharmaceutical Treatment for Dupuytren's Contracture: He contributed to developing a new drug for treating Dupuytren’s disease. • Upper Extremity Trauma Research: Utilizing the MGH and ICUC databases, Dr. Liu analyzed patient-reported outcomes and radiological results of various surgical treatments. • Bionic Limb Technology: At the MIT Media Lab, Dr. Liu was involved in clinical trials for a new bionic limb that improves proprioception and mobility in amputees and contributed to developing a mechanoneural interface for neuroprosthetic feedback using animal models.
