Alexander Y. Shin, MD received his BS degree in Chemistry in 1986 from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He completed his MD degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1990. After completing a one-year surgical internship at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, he served as the Regimental Surgeon for the 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego in 1996 and pursued a Hand and Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. He returned as the Chief of Hand Surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego between 1997 and 2002.
After completing his Navy Service, he returned to the Mayo Clinic and was the Hand Surgery Fellowship Director between 2007 and 2017.
Dr Shin has an academically rich career with over 500 peer reviewed publications, 60 book chapters, and numerous presentations at both national and international meetings. He is the former Director of Education for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and has been a national and international leader in hand surgery education and research. He is the recipient of a RO1 NIH grant on basic nerve sciences. His interest in clinical and basic science research has led to advances in hand surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, microsurgery, vascularized bone grafting, brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries, and the treatment of complex wrist pathology.
