Median and ulnar nerve injuries around the wrist

The main nerves at the wrist level are the median and ulnar nerves. There are various etiologies that can cause injuries to these nerves around the wrist. Common causes include compression neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and Guyon’s canal syndrome, which are particularly prevalent in the elderly population. Other causes can include fractures of the radius or ulna, wrist lacerations, soft tissue avulsion injuries, and compartment syndrome.

Treatment options for these conditions range from conservative measures to surgical interventions. Surgical options include nerve grafting, nerve repair, nerve transfer, neurolysis, nerve decompression, tendon transfer, and the use of nerve conduits. Rehabilitation also plays a crucial role in achieving better treatment outcomes.

In this review, we will briefly discuss these nerve injuries around the wrist and their respective treatments.
